The first (widest) ring is the equator for spheres, or the base for domes and bowls. Runs locally; nothing is uploaded.

The sphere maths

Each layer of a sphere is a circle. For a sphere of radius r, the layer at height y (measured from the equator) has radius:

layer radius = floor(√(r² − y²))

The equator (y = 0) gets the full radius; the pole layer (y = ±r) gets 0 (a single block). The generator computes every layer's radius, renders its ring count, and totals the block cost. Domes take the y ≥ 0 half; bowls take y ≤ 0.

Formulas are printed in full on the methodology page. The circle rasterization inside each layer uses the same midpoint algorithm as the circle generator.

Frequently asked questions

How do sphere generators work in Minecraft?

A sphere is built as stacked circles: for every height y from the bottom to the top, the layer is a circle whose radius shrinks according to radius = floor(√(r² − y²)). The generator lists each layer with its exact radius and outline so you can build from the equator up and down.

What is the easiest way to build a sphere?

Build the equator first (the widest circle, radius r), then work upward and downward one ring at a time using each layer's radius. Mirror the layers top-to-bottom; a sphere is symmetric, so each ring below the equator has the same radius as its counterpart above.

How do I make a dome instead of a full sphere?

A dome is the top half of a sphere: build only the layers from the equator up. Switch the mode to Dome and the tool lists just those layers, still with exact radii.

Why do some spheres look lumpy?

At small radii, block rasterization cannot render a smooth curve, so the shape is necessarily chunky: this is the geometry, not a bug. Use larger radii (9+) for recognizably round forms, or hide the seams with detailing (slabs, stairs, planters) at smaller sizes.

Hollow vs filled: what should I build?

For decoration, hollow shells are standard: build the outline rings and leave the interior empty. For structural spheres (e.g., a planet build you cannot see inside), filled is pointless; for thin domes you may want a double-layer shell (wall thickness 2) so both the inside and outside look clean.
