How the 8:1 ratio works
One Nether block covers the same distance as eight Overworld blocks, so travel in the Nether is
eight times faster. The maths is a simple division or multiplication on X and Z:
Nether X = Overworld X ÷ 8, Overworld X = Nether X × 8
(same for Z; Y unchanged). The calculator rounds to whole blocks, which is what portals snap to.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Overworld to Nether coordinate ratio?
8:1. One block of Nether travel equals eight blocks in the Overworld, so divide Overworld X and Z by 8 to find the matching Nether position (and multiply Nether coordinates by 8 for the return trip). Y is unchanged.
Why does my Nether portal link to the wrong place?
Portals link by proximity: the game pairs Nether and Overworld portals that are closest to each other in scaled coordinates, searching within a radius. If two portals are near each other, link them deliberately by aligning their scaled coordinates with this calculator, ideally at matching Y.
Does Y matter for portal linking?
In modern Java Edition, the game prefers the closest portal within a search area and does consider height when overlaps occur. Best practice: align X and Z exactly via the calculator, and keep Y within a few blocks between paired portals.
How close do two portals need to be to link?
Linking searches a radius (roughly 128 blocks in scaled terms) for a candidate portal. The safest approach is making the intended partner the only portal within that radius, or the strictly nearest one; the calculator gives you coordinates that overlap exactly.
Does this work for servers and realms?
Yes, the 8:1 ratio is a game mechanic, identical everywhere. Server plugins that change portal behaviour are rare; if your server has one, follow its docs.
